Free or Not Free: Talking about Content with Clay Shirky and IBM’s Saul Berman

Social Media Today, with IBM, hosted a breakfast interchange with author and digital visionary Clay Shirky and IBM Global Business Services (GBS) leader and author Saul Berman at the Yale Club. Part of PivotCon and Social Week, the breakfast included an audience of CEO’s, CMO’s, investors and top bloggers to participate in a conversation about how to monetize in the era of “freemium.”

Some highlights:

According to Shirky, innovative publishing models, like the one being used at the New York Times, regard content as a “service,” not a product, and allow people to interact in an experience of their brand.

A New Era for Klout Scores

More than three years ago the Klout Score was born in my bedroom in New York City as a way to make sense of the noise I was seeing in social media. I could share my opinion about anything, instantly, with the people who trust me and the data was available to measure my impact. Fast forward to today and we now have over 3,500 companies using the Klout Score to reward influencers with Klout Perks, give better customer service, reward loyalty, recruit, and much more.

The biggest change in the past three years is that (thankfully) we have people way smarter than me spending each and every day improving the algorithms that calculate the Klout Score. I am incredibly proud of the work the team has done and I am excited to announce the biggest improvement to the Klout Score in our history is launching next week.

Google Analytics Launches In-Depth Flow Visualizations

Google Analytics is about to get a whole lot more visual, thanks to the launch of a new feature, Flow Visualizations.

The new feature was announced by Google SVP of ads Susan Wojcicki at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco. It will launch later today for all Google Analytics users.

Flow Visualizations is a dynamic way to view and experience your Google Analytics data. It utilizes the lens of a Sankey diagram, a specific type of flow diagram. Flow Visualizations allow sites to drill into user behavior based on location, browser, user type and many other variables.

The key to Flow Visualizations, though, is its ability to analyze how visitors are using a website. These visualizations allow website administrators to figure out where people are visiting, how many people stay on their site, how many people visit a sites shopping cart and
